Grommet Diaper bag sewn with Amy Butler Love Fabric

Momma has a brand new bag! Lindsay is getting ready for baby Elle Adeline to arrive on the scene (May 2010) and a functional diaper bag is high on the priority list.

This one was custom made with Momma and baby girl in mind.......using the Grids & Grommets Bag pattern by Indygo Junction.

I modified the interior pockets to hold bottles & toddler cups

The nice feature about this purse/ bag pattern is the straps.

Woven in & out of the grommets the single continuous circle of strap makes it versatile. It can be worn as two straps over the shoulder or pull the strap into one single length and wear it over the chest to free up Momma's hands!

West Virginia Winter Snow and Tribute to Dad

Today I dedicate this blog post to my Father, Jim Miller, who died at home during what would be one of the largest snowfall in decades. April 14,1923 - Feb. 6, 2010

His frail heart couldn't take walking to the garage in 2 foot of freshly fallen snow.

Modkid Kyoko dress was quick to sew!

Honestly, I was hesitant in sewing the Kyoko pattern from Modkid because of the bias binding. This was silly of me because it isn't a huge time consuming process to attach the binding.

I used ready-made 1/2 inch double fold bias tape, but you can make your own.

The Modkid pattern Kyoko by designer Patty Young includes a wonderful instruction booklet. If you are like me, you will appreciate the photo instructions in the booklet.

This above picture is of a size 6 made into the provided optional dress length.

From what I can tell, this pattern is roomy and the obi (sash) is wonderful for custom fitting. The fabrics used for this dress are from the LOVE collection by designer Amy Butler.

Will I make this pattern again? YES

Skills required : Basic sewing skills. Understanding the concept for the sleeves & attaching the bias binding. The sleeves are set in prior to the side seams being sewn and do not require gathering. No zippers, or button holes required on this top!! Sweet!
The instruction booklet provides excellent directions for making your own binding......or you may wish to use ready-made bias tape.

Fitting: Personally I think the fit is very forgiving on this top/dress. The Obi-sash is separate from the top. It wraps around the child's waist,criss-crosses in the back and ties in the front. The sash pulls the dress in at the waist for a great fit.

Design: the design in itself allows for creative mixing & matching fabrics by using two fabrics for the skirt panels. One could easily opt to go with the classic look of making the bodice and the skirt panels from the same fabric.

Y'all know how much I love the Modkid Frida Top and Dress pattern!

Well......lookie lookie!!

Valerie Haberer created a pattern and instructions based on the original Frida design by Patty Young. Now we have a MINI FRIDA tunic and top for 18" and 15" dolls.

I'm seriously thinking of starting a petition for ModKid to create an Adult size Frida pattern!
Hmmm? What ya think?

To make it even better............ the dolly size Sophia Pants pattern is included in this pattern.
Tell me what could make a little girl happier than for her to have a "Just Like Me" look for her doll?

I'm headed to my sewing room now. I'll let ya know what I come up with soon.

Easy to Sew girls top Modkid Frida pattern review

I've said it before, and I'll say it again........I love the Modkid Frida top pattern!
The pattern includes a dress length version and a top length.

For those liking a longer tunic length, you could adjust the length in between the two versions. The brown floral corduroy version shows the dress length over pants ........ without the cap sleeves.

Instead of the bottom hem band, I made a ruffle to match the double ruffle girls pants.

Sew a girls Jumper from the ModKid Frida pattern

I used the ModKid Frida pattern by designer Patty Young to sew up a super easy girls jumper.

When made with a lightweight corduroy and the cap sleeves eliminated, it is hardly recognizable to the picture on the pattern cover.
This proves how versatile sewing can be!

This is an easy as pie pattern!

There are no buttons or zippers.

The cap sleeves (as shown on the pattern cover) are sewn without the need of gathering. (love that!)

There are only 3 main pattern pieces to make this top. (yoke, skirt, and sleeve)
Included in this Modkid Frida pattern is a cute little pocket for added detail.

Modkid Frida has TONS of personal design options for those of us who love mixing fabric prints!

Would I sew this again? Yes

Are the pattern directions easy to read & understand? Yes

Skill level required: beginner

Amy Butler Sweet Harmony Handbag Pattern Review

Have you seen the new Amy Butler handbag pattern, Sweet Harmony Handbag and tote?

This is my first attempt of sewing it.............with some modifications to the strap.

I always spend time studying a pattern before cutting any fabric. This time I wanted to alter the design. Customizing is the great thing about sewing !

If you scroll back up to the picture of the Sweet Harmony Handbag pattern image, you'll see the differences in the straps.

Amy Butler designed the bag's side panel to also incorporate the strap. I squared mine off and added a longer, standard adjustable strap.

The Sweet Harmony Handbag & Tote pattern includes both sizes. I have not sewn the Tote bag size, but it looks like it would make a great carry all or travel bag!

My bag finished out at about 13 inches wide at the bottom and about 8 inches tall. It includes a cell phone pocket on the bag's exterior (hidden behind the exterior pocketpanel).

This average size bag includes roomy interior pockets as well.
Would I sew the Sweet Harmony Handbag again? YES

Sewing Skill level required? Intermediate

Were the pattern directions easy to understand? Yes, as with all of Amy Butler's patterns it was written to accommodate the beginner sewer.

Diaper Bag pattern review

I made The Diaper Bag and found the directions easy to read and understand. This pattern by Craft Apple was well thought out, and went together smoothly.

The back of the pattern cover shows the functional bag interior

Here is picture of my Diaper Bag which may be to be used for another grandchild (due in the Spring of 2010).

We don't know if it is to be a girl or boy, so possibly we'll be sewing another one of these bags soon using boy friendly fabrics. If that is the case, I won't mind sewing another one!

Intermediate Sewers could follow The Diaper Bag pattern successfully.

A diaper carry case with a matching changing pad is a must for any well prepared baby!

This is a fun project which a beginner sewer could easily make. It holds diapers, wipes and a 12 x 24 inch changing pad and features a wrist strap and a snap closure.

Gingerbread man pillow pattern Free

Free pattern download and directions for sewing a gingerbread man pillow

Most families have those special cookies, meals, and decorations which make the season personal. This set of gingerbread men pillows have endured many years in the attic only to be brought out during the month of December. I can't bring myself to replace the eye, but instead find a bit of pleasure knowing the many years these fellows have been around. Somehow they always have found a place under the tree, on a bed or on a sofa during the most joyous time of the year.
My daughter traced around the original gingerbread men and created the pattern for you to download. Please enjoy. I hope they find a place on a bed and part of your Christmas fun. This pattern is free and you can use it any way you like.

Supplies Needed

A scrap of red cotton fabric for heart cheeks

A small piece of fusible web for applique

About a yard of brown cotton fabric for the pillows

Fusible fleece interfacing

one package of Rick Rack per pillow ( buy two packages for making a set)

buttons for embellishment

sew-on doll eyes

matching thread

Poly fiberfil stuffing

water soluble making pen

Directions

Download pattern and tape all sheets together. You will now have one pattern piece which you will place on the fabric fold.

Cut four on the fold for two pillows.

Cut out and fuse the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the front & back of each. ( a total of four) Follow the directions for the fusible interfacing which you have chosen.

Apply the rick rack BEFORE adding the eyes and cheeks.
Notice I've pinned and measured about 3/4 inch from the edge.

Normally I do not pin ......... I usually treat the rick rack the same way I do icing for my edible cookies ........ free style!

Embellish the face as you see fit. I've included a heart shape in the pattern, but you may wish to adjust the size and shape for your pillows. Follow manufacturer's directions for the fusible applique web. You may wish to zig zag or satin stitch around the heart cheeks.

Once you have placed the Cheeks and eyes, use sewers chalk or a water soluble marking pen to draw a mouth and nose.

Satin stitch the mouth and nose. ( I used black thread)

I find the rick rack seems to draw up the pillow front slightly, no matter how careful I am when sewing it in place. If this happens to you ........ don't fret. Simply trim the pillow back piece to match.

Place front & back right sides together and sew using a 1/4 inch seam. Leave an opening as I've shown in the above picture for turning and stuffing your gingerbread man pillow.

Stuff the pillow and close the opening by hand stitching.

Merry Christmas! Now go make some edible gingerbread men. Yummy! I can almost smell them now!

Some of my favorite Sewing tips, tricks & notions

Bias tape makers tied with a scrap of tape to indicate size.

I discovered the antique irons I collected over the years are heavy!

The old irons are a cute way to hold a pattern piece in place for cutting

Basting glue which washes out with water. When dry, it won't gum up your machine

I use basting glue to temporarily apply pocket, trim, labels and etc.

An ice tray holds sewing machine accessories in a drawer within reach of my machine

Bamboo turning tool is use multiple times within any given project to gently poke out corners of pockets etc. They sell plastic versions of this too, but I like the charm of the wooden one.

Sew a Necktie for Your Guy

There is a first time for everything! This is the first time I've sewn a necktie.

You may remember Belle (aka "the Party dog") She'll do anything for a laugh or a piece of food. She's a little pissed at me for making her model a tie without paying her with kibble.

She even struck a pose! Am I cruel for not tossing her a treat?

Here it is! Something we can sew for our little and big men! The boys in our lives may not put on a tie very often, but during the holidays is the perfect time to kick things up a notch.
I came across Little Guy Ties pattern by designer Megan Miles and have been waiting to purchase holiday prints for sewing a few. Use Freezer paper for tracing.

Lay your lining fabric under the tie fabric and cut both at the same time.

Lightly press the shiny side of the freezer paper pattern to the fabric. Cut carefully and accurately.
Use the lightest weight fusible interfacing.

Sewing a Vintage Dress for a Child

Opinions from my blogging friends needed

If this post does not open up completely (where you can see the hat) click on the title. I'm not sure why this post has a problem opening. ???

This and another piece of vintage fabric was used as the gift wrap for a giveaway prize which I won from Jeanette...

My goal is to incorporate the vintage hat, and the small pieces of fabric into a suitable dress design. I'll need a pattern in a size 5T - 6.

This is an adult woman's hat with a very small brim. 1940's?? I think the bow was worn in the front.

The fabric pieces are large enough to make a child size collar or yoke, but additional contrasting fabric will be needed for the main dress panels.

.

This is all I've come up with thus far........a hat.....and a yoke.

(I need help from my blogging friends)

I'm trying to find a pattern suitable in a child size 5-6 and appropriate coordinating fabric which will work with this idea.

Any ideas will be appreciated! Time is clicking by....... I need to come up with something soon........ any ideas or thoughts will be appreciated. :-)

Modkid Sophie Pants sewing Pattern Review

I sewed the Indygo Junction Turnabout Jacket using Amy Butler August Sunrise-aqua as the pocket & button tab. I planned the jacket knowing I'd sew a pair of ModKid Sophie 3 Way Pants from the same fabric.

Sewing is a slow process, but more fun when you have a little helper.

Did you not notice the magnetic pincushion which I've duct taped together?

................ a country girl can fix anything with duct tape!

The ModKids Sophie 3 Way Pants pattern suggests using double needles when adding the top stitch details.

After digging through old sewing notions, I found one, but it is gauged for light weight fabrics.
I used it anyway........
The double row of top stitching turned out fine, but I'd suggest using the proper size twin needle.

Right sides together one pant leg inside the other........ plus a better view of the duct tape repair

Designer Patty Young uses elastic in the back of the Sophie pants leaving the front waist band smooth. There is no front fly........ the button is only for looks.

The side slit (view A) is a cute detail, but you could eliminate the slits & sew the side seam closed ...... you'll still have flared legs.

Will I sew the Sophie pants again? YES

Was it true to size and easy fitting? YES. (see my fitting hint below)

Skills required - basic understanding of sewing and sewing terminology.

If you are brand spanking new at sewing, you may want someone nearby when you make your very first pair of pants.
If you have sewn a little and understand how to make a casing for elastic, a pocket & general skills, you should have no trouble with this pattern.

sizes 2T - 7 included ( see size chart below & size tip below)
- classic pants style
- Suggested fabrics: quilting weight cottons, denim, corduroy, line and twill.

Size tip:
Take a well fitting pair of jeans and measure the outseam ( side length). Compare it to the above chart.

Zoey's height & outseam measurements are exactly one inch shorter than the size 5 on the chart. I knew I would be taking 1 inch off of the length.

The Story of the Selvedge Dress as told by Jodi

The dress had been brewing in my mind for almost a year before I actually started it. I spent that time collecting selvedges.

The dress took seven months to complete and the best guess would be that it has over 300 meters of selvedge in it. Each piece of selvedge overlaps the one previous and each selvedge is use as a unique piece. (no joining of the strips) The full skirt has some pieces which are almost 150 cm long.

by sharing the progress on my blog, as well as the smaller selvedge pieces I was working on, I soon got tagged as the "Creative Selvedge Freak Woman" by some local bloggers and offers of selvedge started to appear in my inbox.

Eventually the project stalled with about another 70 meters of selvedge needed. I mentioned it on my blog and the world of crafters and craft bloggers came to the rescue. Parcels were coming every day.

This dress along with all my other selvedge work has been a collaboration of hundreds of people- I just sewed it all together.

Children Can Sew / Teach a child to Sew

Connor, my grandson, wanted something to do and asked to use the sewing machine.

At 10 years old, he is old enough to understand the workings of a motor & sharp needle and the results of fingers in the way of a sharp needle. I could not have been happier to oblige his request!

We decided to sew a travel size pillow for his younger brother to use during rest time at Pre-K.

To speed things along, I cut the fabric to size and pinned it together. Connor sewed around the pillow and left an opening to stuff it.

Our project was started and finished quickly, giving instant gratification!

"Nana............ what else can we make today"?

"Hmmm......would you like to make a pillow case for your bed pillow"?

"SURE"

Let's talk "Cool weather". It's just around the corner ya know.
Let's talk "Easy sewing". We need to get it done while juggling life.

Let's talk "One of a kind". You won't find this Indygo Junction Inside Out Jacket on a rack in a department store.

Jacket......difficult to sew? No Way ! I was nearly doing back flips with excitement over this one! LOOK below at the design. Easy elementary dolman sleeves!

I chose the brick red and turquoise combo prior to finding the Indygo Junction pattern. The marriage of the sewing pattern and fabric combo are just my style (traditional with a quirky edge)

Written on the back cover of the Turnabout Jacket by designer Mary Ann Donze says:

This Jacket designed for children ages one to ten years allows for years of wear with turned up dolman sleeves to let down over time.

Its loose, asymmetric style easily adjusts to the growing child. Construct in the upper hip length or by adding the lower bands to extend the jacket to just below the hip.

For an unlined jacket, use any two-sided fabric such as polar fleece, linen, batiks, etc. and finish its edges with fabric binding or serger. Or line a jacket and have two looks in one by creating a fully reversible garment.

To sum up the construction process for this jacket is fairly simple and mostly can be by looking at the photo above. A section on the bottom edge of the jacket is left open for turning.

Basically the jacket consists of two main pattern pieces plus pocket & button tabs.

1. the FRONT which incorporates the front dolman sleeve.
There is No separate collar to attach because the front simply folds back to create a collar. We end up with a collar without cutting a collar piece! Thank you designer Mary Ann Donze!!

2. the BACK which incorporates the dolman sleeves.

3.Lower bands which allow for using contrasting fabric (which I have done)

4. tabs for the button holes

5. a pocket

Sew the front to the back as in the photo showing the pinned sleeves. Do this for the lining the same as you did for the exterior. You'll have put together two jackets and then will sew them right sides together and turn. Your pretty lining makes it reversible! I use this wooden tool to poke the corners out nice and neat. Word of caution: Do not use the tip of your scissors to poke the corners. (don't ask how I know)

The photo with the iron shows the jacket turned right side out and beginning to press the seams.
Once everything was pressed, I top stitched the seams. The pattern does not call for top stitching, but it gives a nice professional look if you do.

Note about top (edge) stitching: Go slow and select a stitch length that mimics Ready-To-Wear top stitching. I gather on a #4 setting and edge stitch on #3 and sew on #2.

I like my thread to match the fabric because a slight wobble in my stitch line won't show. For this girls jacket, I sewed with the bobbin thread matching the lining color and the top thread matching the outside fabric.

Pocket time: cut the pattern piece and follow directions given. To make life easier for accomplishing a nicely shaped round pocket, sew a gathering length stitch on the edge which you will fold as shown in the above picture. In this case it was 1/4 or 1/2 inch.

Stitch the gathering length line slowly and make it as perfect as possible. This is will become the fold line around the pocket.

Gently use a straight pin to pull the gathering thread to ease the curve.

Pocket Pressed and ready! The color of the fabric on the above photo is off. Way off!

I love this product! How did I sew without Quilter's Choice Basting Thread? There are other products which glue fabric, but make sure you use one which will not gum up your sewing machine needle. When dry, this basting glue can be sewn over. It is temporary and washes out.

Here is my version of the Turnabout Jacket by Mary Ann Donze for Indygo Junction .
I seriously doubt finding a jacket similar to this in any department store.

know how to make a button hole by machine or hand

applying bias binding to finish the edge of the sleeves (optional)

Sizing :
As stated on the pattern description, it is a style which allows for growing. It is generous in wearing ease. The pattern gives actual finished measurements. (a feature I love and wish all patterns included) You decide how much wearing ease you'd like.

Ideas:
It does not require fleece or interfacing. I used the Home Dec weight 100% cotton fabric from the Amy Butler August Fields collection. The two layers (exterior and lining) make this a nice mid weight jacket. Perfect for mid climate Winters of the southern states or a Fall/Spring jacket in the colder states.

I imagine this pattern could easily accommodate fusible fleece and machine quilting for making a heavier jacket.

I worked three years as a Bail Bondsman Bondswoman) , and know how to sort through lies and liars. I learned jails are kept very cold year round! I've Bungee jumped and love roller coasters, but become nauseated when on a swing.

I had never been fishing until I met my Husband from Mississippi. Soon discovered that I'm never going to catch a fish unless it swallows the hook and more often than not, I have a snagged line.

I know the words to the song You Never Even Called Me by My Name (The Perfect Country and Western Song) by David Allen Cole (another influence from my hubby)

Portabellopixie Claire- Sewing Pattern Review - Round Apron Dress

This tutorial is concentrated on the round apron and attaching it to the dress.

This is a continuation for the same pattern but sewn in the size 2T with different fabrics.

The dress will be constructed to the point of completion minus the apron ties. The main apron panel was attached to the skirt of the dress before sewing it to the bodice. To further clarify, the only thing missing are the ties (sash) of the apron.

Find the center of the front of the dress/apron panel and mark it. Find the center of the apron sash and mark it. Often I mark centers by a lightly pressing a crease.

Lay the Apron sash on the seam line of the skirt & bodice making sure the centers are aligned.
The bottom of the sash is on the seam line and the top covers a portion of the bodice.

Do not extend past the seam, because you will be covering the full part of the gathered skirt. See picture above for placement.

The key to finishing the Portabellopixie Claire dress is attaching the sash in a nice smooth manner and the key to having it smooth, is the pinning!

Lots and Lots of pins!

Here is where I use my favorite foot. If you don't have one like this, use the edge of your standard pressure foot as your guide. I suggest using well matched thread.

Sew the band on slowly as per the pattern instructions. Keep everything smooth and remove pins as you go.

This is my little friend Anna. She can wear a size #3 or 4 T department store clothes. This dress has been cut from a size 2T .

Due to the elastic neckline and sleeves it easily fits Anna! As you can see, this pattern would look fine a little longer and even a little shorter as the child grows. In other words, if your little girl wears a size 2T , make the 2T Round Apron dress and she'll be wearing it a little shorter as she grows taller.

Isn't she adorable? Her mother's blog is Amy Knits. There is always something happening there such as knitting, sewing, bats in the house........

Airedale Quilt and Airedale Terrier

Meet Belle, my 5 year old Airedale Terrier. She's a food obsessed, funny, party animal! Belle LOVES kids because she loves the way they think. One must have a sense of humor to live with an Airedale!

Portabellopixie Claire- Sewing Pattern Review - Round Apron Dress

Fun to Sew! Fun to Twirl !

Designer Sandi Henderson surely must rank among the Best children's pattern designers! Claire was my first experience using Portabellopixie patterns , but will not be my last!

Here is what it says on the back cover of the pattern:

This pattern includes 5 options in sizes 6 months - girls 8. Claire is an excellent pattern for beginners to intermediate sewers. Beginners will find the Peasant Top and Dress easy projects to understand and start out with. When you progress or are and adventurous beginner, try the Apron and Petal knot dresses. There are two aprons to play with, so have fun!

Fun indeed! Fun to sew and fun to twirl!!!! On a scale of 1 to 10 this dress has twirl power rating of an 8.00 ! Only dresses which are cut on the bias and twirl straight out make the perfect twirl score of 10! If you scroll to the bottom of this post, you'll be able to compare the dress which Zoey is modeling to the picture on the pattern cover. The only change I made was adding length to the sleeves. I like the original, but was experimenting with a longer sleeve for the fun of it.

The Portabellopixie Round Apron dress which Zoey is wearing was cut from the size 5 T. Due to the elasticized neckline and sleeve it is fairly forgiving of size and could probably work for a child slightly smaller than Zoey.

I was a apprehensive about sewing the attached apron band at the bodice seam. I was afraid it would end up looking puckered. Truthfully..... frustration was anticipated! I took the designer's instructional advice to heart and used plenty of pins. I had no trouble and zero puckers!

The tulip applique was my own free hand design, but I would have welcomed a few applique shapes to be included with this pattern. Instead, the directions give ideas and some photos of finished dresses for inspiration.

Keep the applique light and flexible. If the applique is large and near the top 1/3 of the apron, it will not hang in loose gathers as an apron should. This tip is not mentioned in the pattern instructions........probably because it is assumed that most people would have common sense on this matter. I'll admit to a " practice" apron panel......and move onto another subject. (grin)

The pattern pieces are printed on extra heavy grade tissue paper, therefore it is easy to trace out the size you need without tearing the tissue! (thumbs up) I love the heavy weight tissue!

Because of 4 variations included, I color coded each variation making it easier to sort though. I marked the Petal Knot dress variation pattern pieces with a red dot, the Peasant dress pattern pieces are marked with a green dot and so forth.

Zoey helped with the color coding and enjoyed learning about pattern pieces. :-)

I enjoyed the instruction booklet and Sandi Henderson's way of illustrating the directions. She includes a drawing with arrows to illustrate which seams are being sewn, making the steps extremely clear at a glance.

There is a mistake on the yardage of the Knot Dress . It calls for 1/2 yard for the skirt and it should be 1 yard. I've only made the sizes 5 and 6 and have not compared the yardage for the other sizes.

Would I make the Round Apron dress again?
YES, but AFTER I make the OTHER variations included in this Portabellopixie Pattern!

Would I recommend the Claire pattern to a beginner?

I would say a person with basic sewing skills could handle any of the variations. The Petal knot dress requires making 2 button holes, top stitching and gathering skills.

The Round Apron version requires gathering, applying bias binding (on the apron) and running elastic through a self casing at the neck and sleeves.
If you understand those skills........you'll have no trouble.

The Peasant dress and Peasant Top require gathering to attach a bottom ruffle and shirring with elastic thread.
To sew with elastic thread:
Hand wind the bobbin with the elastic thread and thread the needle with regular sewing thread. Sew as you normally would and let the elastic thread do the work!

My Amy Butler Mini Dress pattern review

I've sewn the Amy Butler Mini Dress, Tunic & Top pattern in both the dress length as well as the short top versions. Jennifer, my daughter -in-law is wearing the Short Top sewn out of Midwest Modern 2 Honeycomb- fuchsia.

It isn't surprising the Amy Butler Mini dress, top and tunic pattern has been popular.
First off, if you are like me, you like designs which only consist of a few pattern pieces! Let's face the facts: We are B U S Y, but we still enjoy our sewing projects! Simple designs means we have a better chance of actually finishing the project!

This dress has 4 pattern pieces and an optional pocket piece. FOUR. Count em. Only Four pieces!

Select your size by the fullest part of the bust measurement and you should be fine with this easy fitting design.
I made the dress exactly to the pattern for my size. It fit a little low under the arms but looks nice with a little T-shirt. When I sewed the Short Top version, I shortened the length of the shoulder straps about 1/2 inch which pulled the bodice up.

Probably there is a more professional technique for altering the fit under the arms, but trimming a little from the shoulder seam area was quick and painless.

The pattern calls for cute little pleats in the shoulder straps. Wanting more coverage on the shoulders, I skipped the step which called for making the pleats. This resulted in the straps being a tiny bit wider which is noted in the photos.
On top of that, I saved a couple of minutes in construction time, which results with more time to blog!

If you scroll back to the top of the page, you notice the inverted box pleat in Jennifer's top. Compare it to the picture on the pattern cover.

The pattern calls for the box pleat to be stitched with a temporary basting stitch. Once the bodice is attached to the dress front panel, the basting stitches are to be removed.

Because I wanted to close a few inches of the box pleat , I stitched instead of temporarily basting.
The result can best been seen in the photo below. The box pleat could be stitched closed for several more inches if desired. It would change the look of the dress, but is something to consider for added variation.

The Amy Butler Mini Dress pattern calls for a invisible back zipper. If you've never put in an invisible zipper, you'll be pleasantly surprised as to how simple it is! This is an easy garment to "give zipper installing a whirl". Follow Amy's instructions.

Typical to this Designer, this pattern has detailed instructions which are well written. Most likely you will do a great job! If it is a 1st zipper application for you, be sure to stop back by and let me know. I'll give you a Hi Five and shout out "Way ta go Sista"

BUT..... if you want to be wild and crazy, don't use a zipper in this top.

Here is how I did it:

Complete all of the steps up to the point of putting in the zipper. Sew the back bodice to the bodice lining right sides together and insert a button loop between the bodice exterior and lining and the top edge.

The center back seam below the bodice is sewn and pressed open the same as if you had put in a zipper. Read the pattern instructions and complete the back seam in the normal manner.

These little babies are wonderful to make while watching TV!

The embroidery floss on this button..... is.............Vintage. It took 45 minutes to find my floss which had been stored in the bottom of a rubber maid container for many many years! Goes to show........never throw stuff away!

Will I make this pattern again? YES
Would I recommend it for a beginner? YES

How to Sew a Purse - Grids & Grommets by Indygo Junction

Since she would not give me hers, I made my own and am sharing what I learned with you!

The first step to creating your own Grid & Grommets bag is deciding which size and style option suits you. I chose the large, strip bag version. Sewing is my art form. I Pick fabrics which reflect my mood & personal style. You can see from this picture which fabrics I decided on. All of these strips are from Amy Butler's Daisy Chain Collection.

The AccuQuilt Go fabric cutter made the task of cutting the 2 1/2 inch strips a quick process, but you could use your rotary cutter & mat method if you don't own a AccuQuilt Go. Either method, will produce a fun and practical use of scraps.

What I've learned about the Indygo Junction Grids and Grommets purse pattern:

Definition of Practice Run according to Glenna's sewing dictionary; 1: goof-up, 2: mistakes in sewing usually caused by not following directions of the Pattern Designer

The pattern does not call for interfacing in the top panel (where the grommets are attached). Trust me.......there is a reason for not adding interfacing to the top band. Only the main portion of the Grommet bag is interfaced with fusible fleece.

When I made my practice run bag, I used the same fusible fleece to interface the top panel. All looked well until it was time to attach the grommets.
Because of the extra thickness, I could not sandwich the front and back of the curtain grommets into place. Learn from my mistake.....don't use fusible fleece in the top band.
Note added on Sept 9,2009: I now use a heavy stabilizer interfacing in the top band. I fuse it to the exterior band fabric. The heavy fusible interfacing has stability without the thickness of the fusible fleece. I have no problem attaching the grommets thru the interfaced top bands.

Once your bag is sewn and pressed well, baste the lining of the top band to the exterior top band. This simple step is important in assuring the lining hangs pretty inside your bag.

Yes, you could press and pin the lining in place, however basting is more secure. We want the lining fabric to stay in perfect position when we marking and cutting the holes for the grommets.
Remove the basting threads after your bag is finished.

The grommets are extremely easy to "install" through two layers of fabric (no tools required) Dritz includes a template which makes measuring and marking a breeze and is actually quite fun. Let's not forget the Wow factor something as GRAND as this creates! Thanks Indygo Junction for giving us this Wow factor pattern!!
Once you've traced the circle for the cut-out, machine stitch to reinforce. The Grommet will cover your reinforcing stitches. Stitching to reinforce is not mentioned on instructions.

I also ran a thin beading of Fray Check around my marking line to prevent fraying. Once my bead of Fray Check was dry, I cut out the hole. This bag is large enough to load down with books, toys, etc. Taking steps to reinforce the grommet holes is (in my opinion) a good idea. The large version of the Grids and Grommets bag is wonderful for multi tasking! . It is a purse which could multi task as a diaper, shopping, or even a book bag, yet it looks stylish for an everyday bag. The final photo shows the straps pulled through to allow extra length for wearing slung across your chest. Great option when we need two free hands and a secure purse!

I finally found a block of time to sew myself a Field Bag and want to share my experience of it.
Let's start off by saying what you probably already know: It is a huge bag.

Finished size is 18 1/4 inch at the top of the bag and is 27 1/4 inches at the widest point. The Field bag is 15 1/2 inches tall (not counting the handles) x 5 1/2 inches deep.

It is named Field Bag for a reason! You'd love it for multi tasking as a shopping bag, diaper bag, beach bag, carry on and etc. Ideas are swimming around in my head to sew a matching garment bag from the Seams to Me book by Anna Maria Horner.

Wanting to use this as a carry-all type bag, I decided to go all the way and make the zipper top BAG.
This sewing pattern has two versions from which to choose. The Field BAG has a zipper and the TOTE has an open top without a closure. Both choices are the same size with the exception of the top zipper area.

This picture shows how the zipper is installed. I wish I could have found a better color match because the sport zipper has wide exposed tape. White is OK, but try to find a closer match when you make your bag.
Amy Butler's zipper instructions make this easy. This is what the top zipper panel looks like when it is ready to attach to the yoke of the bag. This photo shows another little trick of mine.

Somehow I ended up with a pair of hemostats. I don't remember when they became part of my sewing notions, but I use them rather often. (no, they do not have dried blood on them!) In this case, my cord had slipped down into the tube and I needed to fish it back out. (yes, I know hemostats are typically used to clamp the cord of a newborn) :-)

Hemostats make a great sewing notion!

The directions for making the piping are good. You won't have any trouble doing it even if you've never made piping before.

If you look real close, you can see the bump caused by the piping cord. If you have pinned accurately, this step is easy peasy! I hold my finger next to the bump to keep it tight to the side of the zipper foot.

When done, turn the fabric & check to see if you need to do any touch up.Looking at the bag at this stage shows the simplicity of this pattern design.

Another tip while it is fresh on my mind: Reinforce the seam which attaches the handles to the bag even though that step is not in Amy Butler's instructions. I like to play on the safe side when it comes to straps. It only takes a smidgen more thread and time to reinforce those handles!

I found the instructions to be well written for this step and the pattern pieces were accurate. The bottom panel fit nicely!

OOPS!
Here is what my first try looked like when sewing the front of the bag to the back of the bag (my sides seams did not line up.Remove stitches and do it again....................Mistake corrected.......I can live with this. On to the next steps of making the lining etc.

This bag moved along quickly for me until attaching the top zipper panel to the bag yoke. It isn't hard, but it took some patience because of working a a tight area.
I would advise beginners to make the Field Tote option,which is the same as the BAG, but without a zipper.
As you can see from my zipper photo, making the top zipper panel was very quick and easy. A beginner could do it. I'm not a Master Seamstress . I did it and you can too.

If you'd rather not spend time on the zipper, simply sew the Tote. :-)

Vogue Vintage Style Dress sewn with Amy Butler Fabric

This dress is timeless! Vogue 2902

The sewing pattern is a 1950's Vogue re release and the fabric is Amy Butler's Optic Blossoms.

Erin, who is a 3rd year law student has been sewing since she was a child. There is no doubt that her sewing experience shows! I predict she will be the best dressed lawyer in the court room if this dress is an indication of what her sewing talents are capable of.

If we all had a kitty as smart as this, maybe we ALL could get more sewing done in a day!
I'm sitting here thinking of how I could persuade Erin to send Fitzwilliam to stay with me long enough to get a few projects on my to do list completed. Hmmmm?

I swear I heard my scrap box talking which sounded like "Sew something small, fast, useful & cute".

When I sew a purse or tote bag, I like to make something with the leftover scrap fabric.

This little wallet is very small and can make good use of the scraps. The Wonder Wallet isn't a wallet which I'd want to use every day, but it isn't necessarily meant to be used every day.

There are times when you don't wish to carry a purse, but need a drivers license, credit card and a little cash. THIS is when this tiny tike comes in handy!

Why is it named a 'wonder wallet' ?

Well.......it is designed to NOT require a zipper or extra Velcro to hold coins. Brilliant! See the compartment where the coins are sticking out in my photo?
This compartment holds coins and after you close the Velcro front flap, they won't fall out! It is wondrous. Wondrous I say!

Since these are so simple to sew, I've made them while watching re-runs on TV.

Hometown Swap

I've never joined a swap before, but knew the minute I read Shannon's blog I would enjoy it! Shannon put together a great swap and it must have taken quite a bit of effort on her part. You can read about it here.

Karla received a gift from me which included a can of boiled peanuts from Georgia. Visit Karla's blog@ Zander and Me to see what I sent her.

My Goody Box arrived today all the way from Washington State!

Amy from WA sent me a gift box containing items from her state. When I opened it yesterday, my heart skipped a beat because I had hit the jack pot!

She selected a generous cut of fabric made in her town! Not just any fabric....but Pendleton Wool! A lovely plaid wool! A very warm, snugly wool!

Amy sent me a nice letter explaining she went to my blog, & saw I enjoy sewing. She knew exactly what I'd like and she could not have done a better job at making her Hometown Swap selection!

Amy, you out did yourself!!! Can we do this again next week?

I'm not sure what I'll sew with this piece of plaid Pendleton Wool just yet. Those of you which sew, know something such as this must be pondered and planned!

Shall I make a skirt? A shirt? A jumper? A shaw? Hmmmm?

I've got several months before the weather turns cool in Georgia to decide.

Amy also included a jar of Marion Berry Jam which she made. It is a hybrid of blackberries and raspberries invented in Marion County OR. Yummy!

Her home is located in a small town in WA and is VERY rich in history. She included a post cards and a nice Lewis and Clark coloring book from the local museum. You see, Washougal, WA was an important camping site for Lewis and Clark during their travels across the country.
The coloring book is as much of a history book as it is a coloring book. I'm sure the grand kids will enjoy it!

I'd love to vacation in WA and hopefully someday my Husband & I will take the trip. For now, The Hometown Swap gives me a piece of that part of the country.

Multi Tasker Tote - a Sewing gift for Julie

Rightly named the Multi-Tasker Tote, this is a new sewing pattern by Anna Maria Horner.

My darling daughter Julie, spied the unopened pattern several weeks ago and knew she would like it for several reasons.

Her biggest reason: Large exterior pockets which could hold a child's sippy cup!
(see picture below)

Julie has all but given up on me giving her this tote bag!

For a while I was getting phone calls and Facebook messages asking if I had her purse finished. I'd reply, "almost done".

Three days later I'd reply "it is ready, but I want to show it to someone" and finally " I need to carry it a few times to see if it is comfortable".

A few days ago, she phoned to ask if I'd mind sending her a PICTURE of it ......which I did.

I can't hold on to it much longer before she'll consider the belated Birthday Gift a hand-me-down! Therefore, I'll be removing my keys & wallet any day now!

It has 4 corner pockets ( like a pool table) and interior pockets too!

My hat goes off to the Designer! It is an easy, yet interesting purse to sew. The pocket pattern piece(say that fast 3 times) goes together with the exterior & lining panels in a unique method.

The Lily Top and Kerchief for Zoey

Cute as a button! Zoey could not be happier on the day which this picture was taken. After all, it was preschool graduation day!!

I wanted to show pictures of this little peasant style dress and retro kerchief.

When I think of these little triangle head scarves I think of old Mustang Convertibles & Sally Field when she played Gidget. I'm telling my age again......sigh.....just keep in mind that I was NOT old enough to be driving a mustang at that time!

This sewing pattern is named The Lily Top and Kerchief and is by Pink Fig. It features shirring at the neckline, sleeves and waist.

Zoey wears a size 5 off the rack, and I sewed this dress from a size 5 on the pattern. It fits nicely, however there is not much growing room.

Graduation Day

Sewing a Pink Fig Cuppy Cake dress

I've sewn the Pink Fig Cuppy Cake dress more than once & each time felt as if I were creating a bouquet with flowers!
Each panel combines to make the panels next to it prettier, much the same as flowers in a bouquet.

I wanted this particular dress to be soft and feminine. These Daisy Chain and Midwest Modern 2 fabrics were selected. Making the selection is the hard part of creating this dress.

Each panel making up the dress skirt is top stitched. You'll probably want to use the same thread for all top stitching. Be sure select a thread color which will blend well with all of the fabric panels.

My serger sits next to my machine, which allows me to sew the seam, slide to the serger for finishing the raw edges quickly. I laid out the order of my prints, divided them into smaller sections.

Rather than handling a long strip with 16 panels, I had smaller sections to work with & joined them after each section was completed. You don't have to do it that way, but it seemed less cumbersome to me.

This picture shows the skirt panel sections which are ready to be Top Stitched.
My favorite feet for top stitching! They give me confidence!

With the needle in the center of the foot, you are 'Stitching in the Ditch'. With the needle shifted to the right or left of the seam, you can Top Stitch up to 1/8 inch from the seam.

The Cuppy Cake skirt panels are ready to gather and attach to the bodice.

Do not stretch the bodice while sewing the gathered skirt to it.

How to sew with elastic thread. Shirring tutorial

Several people have asked me about sewing with elastic thread , or shirring. There are several patterns out on the market today which uses this technique. Shirring is fun and is quicker than running multiple rows of cased elastic to get the same effect.

Seeing is believing! Close up pictures should take away any fear of working with elastic thread.
Seriously fellow sewers, this is EASY. The elastic thread ...is...uh elastic. It does all the work. You sew and let the thread take care of the rest. :-)

You'll have to hand wind your bobbin. Not too tight, not too loose. If you wind it too tight it will break. The top thread is standard sewing thread. Use a color which matches the fabric, to best hide any wiggles and wobbles. If you go out of line slightly, don't worry. Sew slowly.

My trusty old Bernina 930 is still alive and kickin! This is the stitch setting I use. I think it is actually called a elastic stitch. I find the stitch width works well between 3.5 and 4 and the length at about 3.5 - 4. Your machine may be different with those settings. Practice on a scrap to see how your settings compare with my sample pictures.

I've sewn samples using a plain straight stitch as well as a plain zig zag. Both work.....because the elastic thread does the real work.
The first row is rather unimpressive. It doesn't start looking drawn up enough until another row is added. The closer you sew the rows, the tighter it draws. Keep that in mind.

The Pink Fig patterns , such as the Cuppy Cake dress and Lily tops, say to sew approx 1/4 -1/2 inch from the first row.
Things start to look good with each additional row.
This is the same sample piece. I stretched it for you to see what the right side looks like. Remember, the top thread is regular sewing thread.

In this sample I used a regular Straight stitch.
Here is the standard zigzag.
Both the straight and standard zig zag seem to pull up tighter. You may want to space the rows out a tiny bit wider if you use these. Chances are, you are sewing on one of those fancy-spancy machines which tells you exactly how to set it up.

Leave yourself about of inch of thread tail to tie off each row. I still back stitch at each end, but I may be breaking the rules by back stitching. Instructions say to tie off.
Once you have sewn all of the shirring rows, make sure you have tied off securely. Take your piece to the steam iron and blast it with some steam. The elastic goes back into shape and looks wonderful.
Step back, and take pride in your handy work!

Handmade Toddler Sundress and Bloomers Set

My friend Jennifer sent me a few pictures of some of her latest sewing creations. Certainly they are worthy of sharing with the blogging world!
Both the toddler and the 'big girl' outfits used pillow case style tops.

The curly haired cutie is wearing pants made from the Belle Pants pattern by Pink Fig.

Isn't it a treat to see how different the same pattern looks.....depending on the fabric used?

Mom, be sure to check those front pockets before tossing those britches in the washing machine!

Purses, Bags and Totes oh my!

This purse makes me smile. It makes me think of a front porch swing & a tall cold glass of sweet tea. Barbara made this purse with fabric from a curtain panel and tells me it is about 10 inches across. What a great way to recycle a curtain panel!

Speaking of recycled curtains....remember when Scarlett O'Hara tore down the emerald green draperies to fashion her Southern Belle style gown? I loved that scene in Gone With the Wind! Hey.....Scarlett was "Going Green" before "Going Green" was cool! Ok.......I'll stop rambling.

Here is another purse made by Barb. She used Amy Butler Daisy Chain fabrics for this one. The main body is Deco Rose -brown. She told me these are her first attempts at sewing purses and is still learning her way around the sewing machine. I'm looking forward to seeing what she creates when she learns how to sew! :-)

Organizing Buttons

Button, Button who's got the Button?

I have not been Blogging , Facebooking, or Twittering much today. I was easily distracted and flitted from one incomplete project to another.
Is ADD in the air??

Somewhere along the day the need for 4 matching buttons came up. My project could use 4 matching buttons OR 2 pink & 2 blue of the same size and style.
I located my button stash and at first glance thought: Perfect colors and Many to choose from!

This bundle is what I was matching to.......something pretty in the works........

For the next 20 minutes I sorted and sorted so more! As husbands tend to do, mine walked in the room to ask what I was doing. When I explained how no two buttons were the same, he looked at me as if I were crazy and began to look for my oversight!
The Tile Man finally came to his manly senses and left the room, mumbling something about wanting to eat lunch.

Just like snowflakes, no two pastel buttons in this collection are alike!

With laundry to wash, floors to sweep, groceries to buy and seams to sew, I found myself going through my other button containers!

Notice the DOZEN of large purple beauties. I've owned them for about 10 years...... possibly BECAUSE they are large & purple!?

Amy Butler fabric turned into The Ashley Bag

Ashley wanted a new bag and requested a top zipper closure.

Here is what we came up with. aka The Ashley Bag.
I gotta say this zipper panel nearly kicked my butt! Putting in a zipper was not the problem. The problem was the mathematics! Look close at the drop-down zipper closure. Since I didn't have a pattern..........let's just say.........my seam ripper and I bonded.

Apparently the length & width of the inner band and zipper panel MUST match the finished width of the bag! Who would have thought?!

Sewing Trivia

My first daughter was born with a birthmark next to her right eye. I didn't want to hide it by covering her hair even though many people asked me if she bumped into something. So instead of covering it, I started making these originally designed handmade felt hair clips! I'm happy that my daughters love what I make, but I'm even happier when they like my creation so much that they give them their own names :-)

Thought ya'all would like the heads up on my shopping find.

I purchased this Better Homes and Gardens magazine with a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby yesterday. Naturally I stood and flipped through it prior to buying and knew it was a keeper. Kids, this one is worth full price!

It actually has cute, useful, do-able (is that a word?) projects. Several totes, pincushions, an adorable spa bag, ipod case and pillows.......just like the title to this blog says.

The above tote is made with Optic Blossom and Honeycomb fabrics in the Amy Butler Midwest Modern 2 collection. Pretty huh? This one is cute too. It uses grommets for attaching the straps

I've done my good deed for the day by telling ya about it, but you'll have to go get your own.

For those Non-Southerners..... you should know that a Waffle House waitress will greet you with a loud " good morning" as soon as you walk in the door. Everyone else will look up from their pecan waffle and nod. Super friendly folks, yet NO more friendly than the ladies working at Dr Ayers Dental office!

I love checking my email and finding pictures of anything handmade. The very first email waiting for me on Saturday morning was this picture of dainty ballerina feet!

Digital cameras are wonderful aren't they? Snap, snap, click, click and it is being sent from Sweden to Georgia!

Jennie purchased the Ballet Slippers by Favorite Things sewing pattern from my web store several weeks ago & promised to share a picture of the finished project.

Just so you know........Jennie told me this was her very first pair of Ballet slippers to have sewn but says she will be be sewing more for family and friends.

Yes, this pattern is a generous fit. I am finding that cutting one size smaller than what we typically wear is working well. As Beth mentioned, add back the length to the hem if there is a difference when using the smaller size.

Sun Surf Halter pattern by Amy Butler was super fast to sew!

Leaving pre-washed fabric in the dryer overnight is optional.

The weather has not inspired me to sew one of these little babies until now. In between horrible thunderstorms laced with tornadoes, we've had some warm spring weather.

I started thinking about the Sun Surf Halter and all of it's possibilities when a friend of mine was talking about making herself one to wear around the house.

For you Young Moms, it's modest style would take you almost anywhere! Some of us whom are NOT as young, may enjoy wearing this gem with Lounge pants on a lazy summer morning or as a bathing suit cover up.

I made this one from Amy Butler Midwest Modern 2 fabric. Noveau Trees - mustard.
The pattern is designed with generous fitting ease and longer length. If you are in between sizes, use the smaller size because of the generous fit. The Sun Surf Halter would look nice paired with skinny jeans or Capri pants.
As you can tell from the photo on the pattern cover, it hits at the hips. I can easily see this Amy Butler halter top as having another possibility ...... add a few more inches to turn it into a sun dress. Pedicure time is just around the corner girls!!

This was my very first time shirring and it turned out great!

Now I'd like to share another little tip.

When selecting your fabrics for the panels, avoid using the same fabric for the skirt panels as in the bodice & hem. Look close at the above photo. You will notice two panels which are the same as the band & bodice. I've made two of these dresses and avoided using the polka dots in the skirt because I used it in the bodice / hem.

The ribbon trim helps to "break up" the solid line in those two panels. Having a hard time putting it into words, but the picture tells the story better. Have I confused you?

The pantaloons were made from the Pink Fig Bella pants pattern modified to be shorter.

The bodice and hem are made with Amy Butler Midwest Modern II collection: Happy Dots.
